Returning Home Following Day Surgery or Diagnostic Procedure

Following your discharge from Day Surgery, you must be driven home by a responsible adult. Once home, you should plan to spend time relaxing and resting to promote a smooth and speedy recovery. You must have a responsible adult stay overnight with you at your home on the day and night of the surgery.

In general, following your surgery:

  • Keep your incision clean and dry
  • Eat a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables
  • Drink plenty of fluids (6 – 8 glasses of water daily) unless you are on diuretics or have Congestive Heart Failure. Check with your doctor.
  • Take all medications as instructed
  • Until your physician says you may:

  • Avoid driving
  • Avoid using power tools
  • Avoid mowing, shoveling, heavy lifting, or vacuuming
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages
  • Resume your normal diet as tolerated unless otherwise instructed.

Please call your physician immediately or return to the HDGH Emergency Department if:

  • You are experiencing excessive pain
  • You are experiencing excessive bleeding
  • You have a temperature
  • You develop a large bruise or an existing bruise continues to grow larger
