Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy allows a doctor to examine inside one’s airway for any abnormality such as foreign objects, tumors or inflammation.

Before the procedure:

  • Do not eat or drink anything 6 to 12 hours before the test.
  • You may be sleepy after the test, so you should arrange for transportation to and from the hospital.
  • Many people want to rest the following day, so make arrangements for work, child care or other obligations.
  • After the procedure:

  • You may experience throat irritation and dry cough for several hours.
  • There may be a small amount of blood in the sputum. Report if any excessive bleeding occurs.
  • No food or fluids for 1 to 2 hours following the procedure. Start with fluids and progress to solid food if no difficulty swallowing.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours following anaesthetic.
  • Extra rest is recommended on the day of your procedure, but moderate activity is beneficial to stimulate circulation.
