Cystoscopy
A cystoscopy allows direct examination of the urinary bladder through a scope. It is designed to pass easily through both male and female urethras.
The procedure:
Urethra and surroundings areas are cleansed.
An intravenous is started and general anaesthetic is administered.
The cystoscope is inserted through the urethra.
Sterile fluids flow into the bladder to expand it allowing the urologist to study the inside of the bladder closely.
After the procedure:
You may return directly to the Adult Day Surgery Department or be observed in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit until you are stable.
Once in the Adult Day Surgery Department, your vitals will be checked, your belongings given back to you and any nourishment or fluids you require.
It is important to drink lots of fluids after this procedure to decrease discomfort during urination.
It is not unusual to experience some burning or a small amount of bleeding the first time you pass your water.
Call your doctor if you:
Continue to have severe burning or heavy bleeding on voiding.
If you are uncomfortable and feel like you have to pass urine and are not able to.
