Billing, Hospitalization Costs and Health Insurance

Ontario Residents
You must have a valid provincial health card in order for provincial health insurance to cover services received while you are in hospital, such as the cost of a standard ward room (3 or 4 beds per room).

The following list is not complete but includes some of the expenses which are not covered by the provincial health insurance plan:

1. The difference between the cost of a private or semi-private room and the cost of a standard ward room

• $235 per day for semi-private
• $275 per day for private

2. The cost of ambulatory aids such as:

• crutches $20
• casts $10 - $50
• comfort sling $15
• ted stockings $13.50
• injections $25

3. The cost of ambulance services ($45.00 if the patient is insured by the Ontario Provincial Health Insurance plan and the service is essential and $240.00 for all others.)

4. The cost of cosmetic or delisted procedures (services no longer covered by your provincial health insurance plan) and their associated visits (services no longer covered by your provincial insurance).

5. The cost of private duty nurses or sitters requested by the family.

If you have a supplementary insurance plan or if you wish to pay personally for additional costs, you may request a private or semi-private room. You are responsible for knowing what coverage is available through your private insurance plan(s). You are responsible for full payment of any charges not paid by insurance plans or companies.

Residents of Another Canadian Province
Hospital expenses are covered for residents of other Canadian provinces when they present a valid card from their provincial health care plan.

Although OHIP does pay for home care for Ontario residents, these services are not covered for out-of-province patients. Check with your home province's insurance office for a list of expenses that are not covered (such as the expenses listed above that are not covered in Ontario).

Persons Who Are Not Residents of Canada
Patients from any other country are responsible for all hospitalization expenses. These would include services such as admissions, visits to clinics and to the Emergency department, radiology testing, etc. The physician or anesthesiologist's fees are never included in the hospital charges.

Charge for a ward bed is $2400 per day
Charge for ICU/CCU is $ 2800 per day
Charge for a semi-private room is $2635 per day
Charge for a private room is $2675 per day

Residents Who Refuse to Leave Hospital Following Discharge
Should you or your family refuse discharge from the hospital, there will be a daily charge of $600. per day for a ward bed.

Television
You may order the additional service of a television rental. If not covered by an insurance company, the cost must be paid directly to the rental company's representative when the service is ordered.

Settling Your Account Upon Discharge
If there are additional costs related to your hospitalization, such as payment of charges for a private or semi-private room, and medical billable supplies and you don't have insurance, please settle these before leaving the hospital.

Payments can be made by cash, cheque, credit card or Interac at the Cashier’s office by the Ouellette Avenue entrance.

Delinquent accounts will be sent to a Collection Agency.
