Breast Surgery

After the procedure:

  • You will be observed in the Recovery room until you are stable. 
  • Then you will be transferred to the Adult Day Surgery Department where your vital signs and dressing will be checked and your belongings returned to you.
  • You will be given nourishment and fluids; as well as, instructions and prescriptions ordered by the doctor.
  • Discharge Instructions:

  • Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours.
  • Continue to do deep breathing and coughing for 24 hours after surgery.
  • Avoid alcohol or other medications not prescribed for 24 hours.
  • Eat a light diet and gradually increase to well balanced meals.
  • You may apply ice packs to reduce swelling and pain.
  • You may take the medication prescribed for pain by your physician.
  • You can usually resume normal activity but it is recommended that you take necessary breaks. Make sure to move and exercise the arm on the operated side. DO NOT hold it stiff.
  • Call your doctor if you:

  • Any numbness to your arm and fingers.
  • Have an excessive amount of fresh bleeding on the dressing.
  • Experience severe pain or swelling at incision.
  • Develop a fever of 101F or 38.3C or more.
