Mental Health Services

Overview

Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital’s Mental Health Services provide acute mental health care for residents of Windsor and Essex County who are over 16 years. Our services are focused on three main areas: crisis intervention, inpatient care and outpatient care. With the completion of renovations in spring 2008, all of Windsor-Essex County’s inpatient acute mental health beds are now housed in specifically designed facilities within the Hospital.

All of our mental health services adhere to our hospital’s core values of respect, compassion, teamwork and stewardship, and our hospital works closely with our community partners to ensure continuity of quality care for our clients in the community.

Emergency mental health services are available on a 24-hour basis through our Emergency Department.

Inpatient Services
Our inpatient mental health services stabilize and treat clients suffering from serious mental illness or acute psychiatric disorders. A multidisciplinary team provides active treatment for patients by developing and implementing individual treatment plans, while working closely with community-based partners to ensure smooth transitions to post discharge care. Physician referrals are required for admission to inpatient care.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital has a total of 68 psychiatric beds in three units.

• The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an eight bed unit providing stabilization services for patients presenting a high risk to the safety of themselves or others.

• 3 North and 3 South are both 30 bed units treating patients suffering from general disorders.

Outpatient Services
A variety of outpatient services are offered by Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital:

• Partial Hospitalization is offered on the first floor of the Jeanne Mance Building. This service provides time-limited, active treatment in a stable therapeutic setting, and is available for clients who are seriously mentally ill or experiencing an acute psychiatric disorder, but are not in danger of harming themselves or others. The service will allow some clients to receive appropriate treatment without inpatient admission, while clients moving from inpatient services will be supported in the transition towards a successful discharge. Clients may enter partial hospitalization through the Community Crisis Centre, or through transfer from our inpatient units.
• The Medication Clinic administers medications to chronically mentally ill patients. Clients require a psychiatric referral to receive this service.
• Assessment and treatment services are available from a Psychologist with appropriate referral.
• Regular access to a consulting Outpatient Psychiatrist may be arranged through the Community Crisis Centre or Outpatient Services, and will require a physician’s referral.
• A Nurse Practitioner operates a medical clinic within outpatient services for clients with mental health concerns who do not have access to a family doctor. Referrals may be requested through the Community Crisis Centre or Outpatient Services.
