Pharmacy

A regional pharmacy service has been developed for Windsor and Essex County. The HDGH pharmacy department provides service in coordination with Windsor Regional Hospital and Leamington District Memorial Hospital. This strong regional pharmacy service provides enhanced patient centred care and continuity of care for patients from pre-admission to post-discharge within hospitals, between hospitals and with community pharmacy partners. Through the standardization of regional policies and procedures, and a regional quality, safety and incident-reporting process, safe medication practice is also enhanced.

At HDGH, the pharmacy department provides care to our patients by optimizing the medications they receive while in hospital. Our pharmacists review patients' therapies to ensure optimal treatment and recommend changes to ensure that the right drug is selected for each patient to achieve positive outcomes. Pharmacists work closely with nurses, physicians and other members of the healthcare team to deliver individualized care and safe medication practice. Our pharmacists provide many specialized services including dosing and management plans for drugs such as warfarin and certain antibiotics that require careful monitoring. Our pharmacy technicians provide medications to each nursing unit by managing a highly sophisticated drug distribution system that utilizes unit-dose packaging, a centralized intravenous admixture program, and automated dispensing devices to promote patient safety.
