What are the steps to
Becoming a Volunteer?

  1. Submit a completed Application for Volunteer Services.
  2. Attend a placement interview with a Volunteer Services staff member to:


  3. confirm your availability and the level of commitment you are able to make
    outline your skills and interests
    review volunteer position opportunities and requirements
    establish a suitable volunteer placement

  4. Attend a general volunteer orientation session.
  5. Complete specific training for your placement area with an experienced volunteer and/or staff.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

Commitment

Most Volunteer positions require a commitment of a minimum of 60 hours, however some short-term positions are available.

Confidentiality Agreement

All volunteers are required to sign Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospitals Confidentiality Agreement and comply with the hospital's Confidentiality and Privacy Policy.

Police Reference Checks

Police Reference Checks are a prerequisite for some volunteer positions.

References

You will be asked to provide two references.

TB Testing

Volunteers are required to comply with Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital's tuberculosis testing policy.

Uniform

You may be required to wear a Volunteer Association uniform and a Hospital Photo ID card while on duty.

What is the minimum commitment I have to make?

All volunteers are required to make a MINIMUM 60 hour commitment and/or four months to Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital. Volunteers are an important part of our hospital team and we rely on them to carry out responsibilities during their scheduled shift.

I need to complete 40 hours of volunteer work in order to graduate. Can I do this?

Students interested in volunteering must be 15 years of age or older and be able to commit a minimum of 60 hours to the program they have enrolled in.

Can I work in whatever area I want?

Volunteers are placed according to a department's needs and the suitability of the volunteer. The Volunteer Services Department does not offer placements which may entail clinical practice and/or application.

What kinds of volunteer placements are available?

Volunteers are placed in over 50 different areas of the hospital, some of which include Discharge, Operating Room, Emergency Room, Gift Shop, and Crossroads Cafe.
