Windsor, ON –Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital a member of the Windsor/Essex Injury Prevention Coalition in partnership with the Southwest Injury Prevention Network which includes all Health Units, MTO and LHSC has recently launched the No More Accidents! Call it what it is… Campaign.
Accidents are defined as an act of fate that happens for no apparent reason, such as lightening strikes and tornadoes. Therefore, referring to injury causing events, such as car collisions caused by drinking and driving as “an accident” is both misleading and a concern to individuals working in the field of injury prevention.
According to Elsie Galbraith, Trauma Services Coordinator at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital, the purpose of the No More Accidents! Call it what it is… Campaign is to change the language commonly used to describe injury and its causes. “This makes people more aware that injury can easily be predicted and prevented,” states Galbraith. “In fact, most incidents causing injury or death are due to circumstances that are predictable and preventable. They are not accidents. We know that texting while driving can cause serious crashes, speeding increases the chance of losing control of a car, and pedestrians walking without reflective gear when it’s dark can be hit by motorists.”
To support this campaign, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital has posted a No More Accidents! Bulletin Board in the main hallway, No More Accidents! Posters on the patient units, staff are wearing No More Accidents! Ask Me pins, and have been asked to drop the “A word” when charting, speaking with patients, families, media or colleagues.
