All competent persons have the right to make decisions regarding their medical care including the right to refuse life-sustaining treatment. In the event that you are unable to communicate your wishes for care in a crisis situation, there are two ways to ensure that your wishes are respected.
An Advance Directive (commonly known as a Living Will) is simply a written statement outlining your wishes.
A more formal approach is to legally appoint another person to make decisions on your behalf through a Power of Attorney for Personal Care.
It is important for you to let your healthcare team know if you have an Advance Directive or a Power of Attorney for your care so that they can respect your wishes.
