A Base Hospital provides medical direction, leadership, and advice in the provision of ambulance based pre hospital emergency healthcare in a specific geographical area. The Essex-Kent Base Hospital has been designated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to provide these services to the paramedics in Essex and Kent counties. The program, hosted by Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital, acts as a resource center and facilitator to assist in ensuring that ambulance based pre hospital care and transportation is meeting the community’s needs.
In addition, the Base Hospital provides training, quality assurance, continuing education and guidance to ambulance based pre-hospital emergency care providers. All such programs are approved in advance by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The Base Hospital also functions in an advisory capacity to the Ministry on matters relating to ambulance based pre-hospital emergency care. |
