Nutrition is an important component of optimizing patient recovery
and coping. Clinical Nutrition Services at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital is
comprised of specialized Registered Dietitians who function as essential
members of our healthcare team providing comprehensive nutrition care
and education aimed towards the prevention of malnutrition, improving
nutritional status and therapeutic management of many diseases and
conditions.
Registered Dietitians are responsible for comprehensive nutritional
assessment of patients, determining their nutrient needs, and management
of specialized nutrition therapies including enteral nutrition
delivered via tube feeding and parenteral nutrition delivered
intravenously. They also provide therapeutic diets for disease
management including diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, kidney disease
and dialysis, and nutritional counseling.
Providing service to the Intensive and Cardiac Care Units,
Cardiology, Diabetes, Surgical, Medicine, Renal Dialysis, Neurology and
Neurosurgery, Mental Health and District Stroke, their goal is to aide
malnourished patients or patients at risk who will benefit from
nutritional intervention during their hospitalization. Nutrition
intervention in moderate to high risk patients may prevent malnutrition,
improve complications of disease, injuries and illness and decrease
length of hospital stay. Nutrition counseling promoting dietary
management of disease helps patients following discharge and decreases
the potential for readmission.
