Walking was something Vince Rosati loved to do. Throughout his busy life, whether establishing one of Windsor and Essex County’s most successful family-owned building and contracting companies, or getting personally involved in community activities, Vince, along with wife Olivia, was constantly on the go. For Vince, walking was more than just a way to get from one place to another while touring a job site, it was also a form of exercise and relaxation, that helped him get through long working days. But eventually, the wear and tear on his back resulting from a lifetime of construction work, starting as a brick-layer to the founding of the Rosati Group, caught up with him. He began to have trouble walking relatively short distances of two to three hundred feet and his left leg tingled regularly. For a man who enjoyed and was used to hard physical work, this betrayal of his body and reduction in his strength and stamina was unacceptable. This was not be the first time Vince had faced a difficult health issue, and he was not about to let this one stop him either. Several years earlier, Vince had a benign tumor, about the size of an orange removed from the front of his brain. He faced this challenge with the same grit and determination and was referred to Dr. Dante Morassutti, a neurosurgeon at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital.Taking advantage of the hospital’s leading-edge MRI capabilities Dr. Morassutti reviewed detailed images of Vince’s chronic condition and recommended surgery. At one time the prospect of having back surgery caused patients to have great anxiety. Today, thanks to advances in surgical techniques and instruments many back surgeries can be done with less invasive procedures, which speeds recovery and decreases post-operative complications.Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital provides neurosurgical and neurology services for the Erie St. Clair integrated health network. More than 2200 neck, back and brain surgeries are performed by Hôtel-Dieu Grace’s experienced neurosurgery specialists each year. The neurosurgical facilities at Hôtel-Dieu Grace have played a significant part in helping to attract these highly skilled surgeons to our community and was an important consideration in Dr. Morassutti’s decision to relocate to Windsor from the United States. “The facilities here are as good, if not better than any medical centre that I have been associated with,” he said.Dr. Morassutti performed a metrx minimally invasive mircoforaminotomy. Making a small incision on Vince’s back, Dr. Morassutti used HDGH’s state-of-the-art neurosurgical equipment and advanced techniques to remove the bone spurs and thickened ligament that were compressing on Vince’s vertebrae and nerve roots.Vince’s surgery and convalescence went very well, staring with his post-operative care.Within three to four hours after his surgery physiotherapists and nurses had him up and out of bed for a brief walk. While nervous at first and worried that he may reinjure his back, Vince’s caregivers were quick to reassure him that he could do it. “It was excellent,” Vince reports, “they gave me the confidence to take those first steps.” Vince was discharged from the hospital two days after his surgery and within two weeks he felt “one hundred percent better.”Vince recommends that anyone with a back injury to have it taken care of promptly and is grateful to have been able to have his surgery done in Windsor. “Have it done, it’s no fun having a sore back. I was surprised how quickly I was able to start walking again. Dr. Morassutti treated me very well. We are lucky to have a doctor with his skills in our community,” said Vince.Vince and Olivia have since turned the business over to their son’s Nick and Tony. He and his wife Olivia have more time for leisure activities together and enjoy travelling. Vince and Olivia recently returned from a trip to Italy and Paris, which no doubt included some walking tours in the City of Lights! How can you say thanks to Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital? All of us are touched in some way, either directly or indirectly, by medical challenges.
