HSMR is an overall quality measurement tool that compares a hospitals’ mortality rate with the overall average rate. HSMR has been used by hospitals to assess and analyze mortality rates, and to identify areas for improvement. Over time, hospitals can also track the change in their HSMR to assess how effective its performance improvement strategies have been in reducing overall mortality rates.
According to CIHI, the HSMR tool is not intended to serve as a measure for hospitals to compare themselves against other organizations, or for the public to use as a measure of choosing where to seek care. Hospitals, even within a region, serve different segments of the population with different health needs. This fact helps to explain why results will vary from hospital to hospital.Reports
