Knee Replacement surgery is a commonly performed operation done to relieve pain in the knee. It consists of replacing the diseased and painful joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee.
Before the procedure:
- Depending on the time of your surgery, do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the surgery.
- Bring non-slip slippers with you to the hospital.
- You will be instructed on what pills to take with a sip of water on the morning of the surgery and which to bring with you to the hospital.
- You can expect to be in the hospital for approximately 4 days. Arrange for support and transportation once you are able to go home.
- A consultation with a nurse will be done when you arrive at the Pre- Admission Clinic.
- Blood tests will be taken.
After the procedure and during recovery:
- An x-ray will be taken.
- Blood tests will be taken.
- You will be helped with deep breathing, coughing, leg exercises and turning.
- Medication will be given as required or needed.
- Your bandage will be removed and ice applied for 20 minutes 3 times a day.
- Transfers and walking will be done with crutches or a walker. You will be aided until you are able to walk on your own.
- Knee bending exercises will be required 3 times a day.
- Nurses will educate you on the precautions and procedures of getting up and moving around at home.
- Physiotherapy will be arranged for you.
