The Integrated Hospitals Laboratories of Windsor Essex is a cooperative alliance between Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital, Leamington District Memorial Hospital and Windsor Regional Hospital. The laboratory at HDGH provides testing services for patient diagnosis and treatment monitoring, and supports many hospital services including Emergency, Surgery, ICU, CCU, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Medicine.
HDGH provides routine and Stat services of:
- Pathology for the microscopic examination of tissues, frozen sections and other specimens for diagnostic reporting to the patient’s surgeon and/or physician. Pathologists (specialized physicians) provide microscopic interpretation based upon Histology processing of specimens onto permanent microscope slides with various stains.
- Microbiology for the entire integrated laboratories in the identification of pathogenic organisms in blood, wound and other fluid samples that cause infection. The infecting organism(s) is also tested against various antibiotics to determine effective agent(s) for treatment.
- Hematology for blood and fluid cell counting and microscopic differentiation. Coagulation testing to verify a patient’s hemostasis coagulation status. Monitor anticoagulant (blood thinning) therapy.
- Transfusion Medicine for the provision of compatible blood and blood components for patient transfusions. Blood group antibody investigations are also performed as part of the compatibility testing.
- Chemistry testing of enzymes, lipids, electrolytes, therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology, etc. HDGH provides special chemistry testing of hormones, electrophoresis and specific proteins for the entire integrated laboratories.
- Cytology for the examination of normal and abnormal cells in tissues and body fluids. Abnormal cell detection provides information on malignant, pre-malignant, and other disorders.
The laboratory provides services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. HDGH Laboratory Services performed over 2.5 million tests during the 2008 2009 fiscal year. |
