“I was one of those people who need you guys,” explains local jewelry designer and maker Steve Onica, as he details the very personal reasons behind his steadfast support of Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital.

A serious, health scare affecting his father, first brought Steve to Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital. As a result of the quality and compassionate medical services his father received, Steve discovered that his recently adopted community has much to offer. More than even he previously imagined.

The incident began innocently enough. Last autumn, Steve’s father, Traian, had come to Windsor to stay with him, while his mother Antonia, was in Europe for a family funeral. His father had recently undergone an emergency angioplasty procedure in Toronto, and was not able to travel long distances. Steve thought it would be better if his father continued his recovery under his watchful care. As it turned out, it was a judgment that may have saved his father’s life.

During his visit, Traian began feeling ill. His symptoms were alarmingly similar to the heart-attack that led to his angioplasty procedure. Steve brought him immediately to Hôtel-Dieu Grace’s emergency department. “The nurses were amazing. We did not come by ambulance. They took us in immediately and new exactly what to do,” Steve explained, “We could not have asked for better care!”

The doctors and nurses were able to stabilize Traian and he was admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit to monitor his condition and undergo further testing. Two days later Steve’s father underwent an angiogram procedure at Hôtel-Dieu Grace. The cardiologist determined there was no further damage to his heart and there were no blockages. Through laboratory testing it was recommended that modifications be made to Traian’s heart medication, and he was safely discharged home.

Relieved and grateful for the professional and compassionate care provided to his father, Steve in consultation with family members and his parents decided it was time to move his father and mother to Windsor, from Toronto. It was a decision made easier because of the family’s confidence in, and the excellent healthcare available at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital.

“They (Steve’s parents) are at an age where it’s better for them to be close to family, in Windsor. We can take care of them and we feel better knowing Hôtel-Dieu Grace is close by if needed,” said Steve.

Recently Traian and his wife Antonia had out-patient cataract surgery at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital. The procedures went well and without complication, further validating Steve’s decision to bring his parents to Windsor.

“It gives me great peace of mind knowing my parents are close to us, and that we have the hospital that can provide the healthcare they need,” he states.
