Respiratory Care

Respiratory Therapists are highly skilled professionals who care for patients suffering from respiratory (breathing) and related problems.

Respiratory Therapists at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital are members of, and are regulated by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario. Other professional organizations include the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists, and the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario.

Respiratory therapists care for patients requiring ventilatory support in the critical care units, monitor and assess patients receiving high levels of oxygen and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist patients with their expertise throughout the hospital.

Patient and staff education is another large part of the Respiratory Therapists day. “RRT’s” also respond to all cardiac arrests throughout the hospital and attend all traumas in ER. Critically ill patients who require transport for specialized tests, or to another facility will have a Respiratory Therapist present monitor and assist with respiratory problems the patient may experience.

Respiratory Therapists staff have a state-of-the-art Pulmonary Function diagnostics lab, and several of our therapists are certified Asthma Educators, consulting with patients through both in-house and community asthma clinics.

Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital is a clinical affiliate of the Fanshawe College Respiratory Therapy Program in London Ontario, providing clinical placement and experience for students enrolled in that program.

Thanks to our highly skilled team of Respiratory Therapist, patients at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital can breathe easier!
