Reporting to the Program Manager, the R.N. is responsible for providing safe, effective and ethical nursing care. The Registered Nurse for the Specialized Mental Health Program cares for individuals with serious mental illness. This is a position that will improve care of the mental health patients in the tertiary care setting and support linkages with community partners which would support the care for the mentally impaired clients.
The Nurse will be a clinical resource within the multidisciplinary team providing care, assisting with comprehensive assessment, rehabilitation and treatment to adult patients with serious mental illness and their families. This model of care follows the principles of client centered care within a psychosocial rehabilitation approach. In addition, the Nurse will provide education to the department staff both formally/informally that is consistent with best practices regarding the care of the patients with serious mental illness.
This position contributes to the hospital mission by being a team member, which ensures confidentiality, quality, and client-centered health care in the community.
The R.N. adheres to the philosophy, policies, procedures and Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
The R.N. complies with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment
• Excellent psychiatric assessment skills
• Good knowledge of community agencies
• Available to work all shifts as required
• Knowledge of and demonstrated working experience delivering a full range of high quality nursing services to the seriously mental ill including adults and the geriatric populations and their families in the context of tertiary level psychiatric hospital.
• Knowledge and skills in a range of therapeutic approaches, including brief therapies, with individuals, couples, families and groups.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation; Mental Health Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Health Care Consent Act.
• General good health and level of fitness appropriate for the demands of this position
• Excellent communication skills with the command of the French language considered an asset.

Education and/or Certification:
• Current certificate of registration issued through the College of Nurses (CNO)
• Current BCLS- required
• One year experience in mental health (inpatient acute/tertiary)- required
• One year outpatient specialized mental health (ACT or RTF)- preferred
• Recent experience (within the last 2 years) in the administration of Electroconvulsive Therapy - preferred
• Current ACLS- preferred
• Competent in 12 lead EKG interpretation and defibrillation- preferred (will be tested)
• Non-violent de-escalation and Code White training – preferred
• Mental Health Nursing Certification - preferred
